4 Ways to Reduce the Staining That Occurs as a Result of Smoking

Smoking is one of the worst things you can do if you want to maintain a healthy smile. This is because tobacco smoke contains high levels of tar and nicotine, which can both bond with the porous surface of your teeth to create yellow or brown stains. This means that many smokers will frequently have their teeth whitened, but, unless the habit is kicked altogether, another whitening treatment will be needed in the future. If you do continue smoking, here are four ways to reduce the amount of staining that occurs.

1. Use a Baking Soda Toothpaste

No matter if you're a pack-a-day smoker or someone who has never touched a cigarette, it's important to brush and floss daily in order to keep your mouth healthy and your teeth white. However, smokers can benefit more from toothpastes that contain baking soda. Baking soda is slightly abrasive, so it will help rub away staining agents before they get a chance to permanently discolour your teeth. You shouldn't brush after every cigarette since this abrasive action can be bad for your teeth if you brush too frequently, but twice a day should be fine.

2. Use Anti-Tar Mouthwash

One thing that you can do after each cigarette is rinse out your mouth with an anti-tar mouthwash. This will not only help eliminate any lingering odours, but it can also prevent staining since using it will dramatically reduce the amount of tar inside your mouth and wash it away from the surface of your teeth. Try keeping a travel-sized bottle on you throughout the day so you can use it regularly before stains have a chance to set.

3. Use a Filter

Nearly all smokers use cigarettes that come with their own filters, but you can always add another filter to help further prevent staining. There are several varieties available, and your dentist will be able to point you in the right direction. No matter the brand, they work by significantly reducing the amount of tar that enters the mouth. It is this sticky brown substance that causes the most troublesome stains.

4. Minimise Exposure Time

Finally, try to minimise the amount of time smoke actually comes into contact with your teeth. Resist the urge to keep smoke in your mouth. Exhaling or inhaling slowly and keeping smoke within your mouth will only increase the amount of time your teeth are exposed to staining compounds.
